Atomic Cafe - Red Tulip

While I’m taking time to recover from Lyme Disease (my motor skills are still out of balance), I’ve been reflecting on how much I miss the simple act of holding a brush.
In the meantime, I wanted to share one of my favorite paintings: “Atomic Cafe – Red Tulip” (oil on canvas, 30” x 30”).
This piece began with a quiet moment at the Gardens of Central Park in Warsaw, IN, when I looked up and saw a single red tulip glowing against the bright blue sky. What captivated me was the play of cadmium red and orange hues, and the way the sunlight illuminated the petals in contrast to that endless blue.
It became less about the flower itself and more about immersion in color and light—a joyful visual meditation.

National Bison Month - July

 

NATIONAL BISON MONTH - JULY

Thousands of Bison use to move across Southern Indiana, migrating West, creating what is called the ‘Buffalo Trace’ route as they headed into the open Illinois prairies to graze.

The Bison image is seen on the seal of Indiana and the Indiana state historical coat of arms. Named national mammal of the United States in 2016.

This painting I did, titled ‘Bison, bison - Tatanka’, awakening from a slumbering posture, is a 5ft x 7ft oil on canvas. ($9,500.)

Symphony of Shadows (Beach Scene)

 

As I’m working on a special commission, thought I’d post this oil painting I did, as the summer has winded down. (The thought just reminded me of a song “End of the Season” written by Ray Davies on the Something Else By The Kinks album.)
The painting titled “Symphony of Shadows” is 5ft x 6ft, oil on canvas. Depicts a hot sunny day on Myrtle Beach, SC, near Springmaid Pier, with two of my daughters under the beach umbrella reading. Spread around them are the typical beach items you’d have. Shadows are everywhere, sand impressions, the multiple objects, even included the moon (craters) and contrails (overlaps) for shadow references. (My favorite aspects of the piece are the bold washy brush strokes and exposed pencil lines from the initial drawing.)

Dogs

The two paintings shown are: “Freddy, The Pomeranian,” oil on canvas, 30” x 40” by me, and Edouard Manet, “A King Charles Spaniel,” oil on linen, 18” x 14”, (1866).

After a number of inquiries I am now taking commissions for dog portraits. During my short hiatus I have enjoyed viewing and studying animal paintings by Stubbs, Velazquez, Frans Marc, and Edouard Manet. Particularly interesting have been the dog renderings. Return to the Badlands

As stated in my Instagram, "I love it when a plan comes together" (cigar in hand) and the clients were delighted also! The painting shown "Return to the Badlands" oil on canvas, 20" x 20", from the Badlands series, was a commission piece for the breakfast nook of their newly remodeled kitchen. Looks wonderfully warm and inviting, if I do say so myself. Having delivered it to Grand Rapids, MI, I was treated to an Americano coffee, just to my liking! How cool was that!

This painting was in direct response to a photograph a friend had taken of a bison near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Badlands National Park, South Dakota. The moment he shared his photo and story I was imaging a large oil on canvas painting exhibiting it's powerful presence – the National Mammal of the United States.
This piece can be seen at the Ivy Tech Community College, Warsaw, IN. It is a visual reminder of the bison heritage and the State of Indiana. Numbering in excess of 6 million in the past, the bison migrated through Indiana creating what is now called the Buffalo Trace trail. The bison is also included on the Indiana State Seal as a symbol of westward expansion.

I simply wanted to capture the fleeting tranquil early morning moment, with a sketchy soft brush approach. The scene was shot while in Myrtle Beach, SC, from a balcony, it had a Bellows-esque perspective and a Lorraine-esque colored horizon I couldn't resist. I also, was intrigued by the dark tones and values that morning, reminiscent of an early Monet moonlit piece, "The Beach at St. Adreese."

This painting was a culmination of all the studies, sketches, drawings, paper paintings that I had been working on. With a purposeful frontal composition, it expresses the power, energy, and mass of an ocean.

Happy New Year 2018! I have been working on a commission piece as shown here in it's early stage. A 30” x 40” oil painting of Alaska. This area is the Harding Ice Field Trail leading to Exit Glacier. What is so intriguing about the piece, besides the mesmerizing view, is that the photo (my source with client input) was shot from a drone taking a video. The drone is being controlled by one of the hikers on the path to the left, who are the clients! Familiar with my work and delighted with my progress, they wanted a painterly, expressive rendition of the area that provides a colorful, timeless, and expansive view of what they experienced while hiking there, not just a photo copy, much to my exploratory impulsive delight.

One day I was out in our backyard marsh area (which butts up against Pike Lake) sketching and photo shooting wild life and what ever else might catch my eye. As I was looking around standing in a field of glistening marsh grasses, I turned to my right and froze, about 10 yards away was standing this Sandhill Crane, (had to do a double take to make sure what I was seeing.) The scene was so picturesque, as I slowly raised the camera, I was immediately thinking painting! The colors, marsh grasses glowing in spots, bending back and forth in the soft breeze, just presented a majestic composition of the Grus Canadensis.

One late afternoon these deer invaded my bird feeding space and began devouring their food. As I came to the patio door to shoo them away, the one turned and stared at me as if saying, “hey, what’s your problem, we're eating.” The composition, triad posturing of their heads, lighting, and color was so visually organized I couldn’t help but grab my old LG cell phone and take a picture and use it as a painting source. I proceeded to paint the composition vigorously, punctuating areas of interest throughout.

My youngest daughter went on a trip with her friend’s family to Hawaii. One day she shot this pic with a cell phone. The minute I saw the image I thought painting. Color tones throughout subtly separate the sky, clouds, mountain, and Island, all creating a very picturesque setting. But what I saw were these little individual expressive moments that I would actually call movements.

Early Morning Fog

This last piece from my Fact and Ambiguity series, suggests a light reminiscent of the 17th century landscape painters' interest in luminism but with a modern twist. The fact is the scene, a shed, a tree, etc. The ambiguity is the distillation of the forms, the sublime of the objects - a subtraction of information that still conveys a luminous effect. Here the dawn light cuts through the early morning fog on an Indiana country field.

You ever have those moments on the beach when a storm is approaching, the sun is out, the sand is hot, and yet there is the menacing thunderstorm threatening the area? You either pack up and head to shelter, or wait it out and maybe get drenched. This painting reflects the expanding surroundings as that decision is being made.

On view view here, 5ft x 6ft oil painting "Symphony of Shadows (The Beach Scene)." For sale.
This painting is a contemporary view done in a painterly manner, exposing the various hues that are in shaded areas of forms and cast shadows. The scene is of my two daughters enjoying a hot sunny mid-day summer at Myrtle Beach State Park, SC.
The objects scattered throughout are all significant to the family grouping of a day at the beach. The girls are both reading books from the Chronicle of Narnia series, the old beach weathered umbrella is borrowed from their grandfather. Flip flops, shovel, bucket, Frisbee, towels, etc., all items hauled down to a beach, becoming for me a visual cornucopia of values and colors in their forms and cast shadows. Even the sand divots, moon and contrail reveal a value and color.
