Return to the Badlands

As stated in my Instagram, "I love it when a plan comes together" (cigar in hand) and the clients were delighted also! The painting shown "Return to the Badlands" oil on canvas, 20" x 20", from the Badlands series, was a commission piece for the breakfast nook of their newly remodeled kitchen. Looks wonderfully warm and inviting, if I do say so myself. Having delivered it to Grand Rapids, MI, I was treated to an Americano coffee, just to my liking! How cool was that!

Paintings for Private and Public Places

Sandhill Crane (Near Pike Lake, Warsaw, IN) oil on canvas, 4' x 4'. $2,800 (does not include shipping, contact me at youngtimothyw@gmail.com.)
One day I was out in our backyard marsh area (which butts up against Pike Lake) sketching and photo shooting wild life and what ever else might catch my eye. As I was looking around standing in a field of glistening marsh grasses, I turned to my right and froze, about 10 yards away was standing this Sandhill Crane, (had to do a double take to make sure what I was seeing.) The scene was so picturesque, as I slowly raised the camera, I was immediately thinking painting! The colors, marsh grasses glowing in spots, bending back and forth in the soft breeze, just presented a majestic composition of the Grus Canadensis.

Storm Front

Storm Front (Myrtle Beach State Park) oil on canvas, 40" x 30". Sold.
You ever have those moments on the beach when a storm is approaching, the sun is out, the sand is hot, and yet there is the menacing thunderstorm threatening the area? You either pack up and head to shelter, or wait it out and maybe get drenched. This painting reflects the expanding surroundings as that decision is being made.
Available for commissions please contact me with any questions at youngtimothyw@gmail.com.

Paintings for Private and Public places

Paintings for private and public places. I am now accepting commissions and site specific projects. Please contact me by email with inquires youngtimothyw@gmail.com.
On view view here, 5ft x 6ft oil painting "Symphony of Shadows (The Beach Scene)." For sale.
This painting is a contemporary view done in a painterly manner, exposing the various hues that are in shaded areas of forms and cast shadows. The scene is of my two daughters enjoying a hot sunny mid-day summer at Myrtle Beach State Park, SC.
The objects scattered throughout are all significant to the family grouping of a day at the beach. The girls are both reading books from the Chronicle of Narnia series, the old beach weathered umbrella is borrowed from their grandfather. Flip flops, shovel, bucket, Frisbee, towels, etc., all items hauled down to a beach, becoming for me a visual cornucopia of values and colors in their forms and cast shadows. Even the sand divots, moon and contrail reveal a value and color.

Mount Moran (Grand Teton National Park)

Mount Moran (Snake River, Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming) oil on canvas, 30" x 40"
Commission painting for the Great Lakes Trading Company office (a futures industry business.) The client (owner) said it looked better than the photo he had taken, he was extremely excited and overjoyed. I muscled up the sky a bit, and adjusted some color issues to get that early morning view (the gestalt rather than the particulars.) He said I nailed it. Now I'm going to have to take a trip out there to see it live :-)
[A side note. Brush handling and color tones were applied loosely to eliminate stiff, static look of photograph. Somewhat inspired by "The Valley of Mawddach, with Cader Idris Beyond" by Richard Wilson (1713-1782) on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art.]

Four's a Crowd

Four's a Crowd, oil on canvas, 48" x 48"
(For sale: $2,800, contact me at youngtimothyw@gmail.com)
This piece is one of the paintings featured in my solo exhibit, "New Paintings" that opened Thursday the 10th, at The Robert E. Wilson Art Gallery. The gallery is located in the Merillat Center for the Arts building on the Huntington University campus, Huntington, Indiana. The show runs through October 16th. There is an artist reception, open to the public, Friday, September 18th, 6:00pm-7:30pm, should be lively.
The painting has a story, and some influences throughout which will be partially discussed at the opening. In short, one late afternoon these deer invaded my bird feeding space and began devouring their food. As I came to the patio door to shoo them away, the one turned and stared at me as if saying, “hey, what’s your problem, we're eating.” The composition (triad posturing of their heads, etc.), the lighting, the color was so visually organized I couldn’t help but grab my old LG cell phone and take a picture and use it as a painting source. I proceeded to paint the composition vigorously, punctuating areas of interest throughout.

Path to the Cabin (Myrtle Beach State Park)

Path to the Cabin (Myrtle Beach State Park) oil on canvas, 30" x 30"
(For sale: $1,200, contact me at youngtimothyw@gmail.com)

Prelude to my upcoming "New Paintings" solo exhibit at The Robert E. Wilson Art Gallery, Merillat Centre for the Arts, Huntington University, Huntington, Indiana. September 10 - October 16, artist reception Friday, September 18th, 6:00pm-7:30pm.
This painting is of the path that leads back to the State Park cabins from the beach. The expressive painterly tones suggest the South Carolina coastal warmth and light breezes I enjoy so much, (a little Twachtman-ish.)

The Path - Mrytle Beach State Park

The Path (Myrtle Beach State Park), oil on canvas, 30" x 30"

A work in progress: Another piece I started, now going into the various areas to further layer color and value for an expressive solemn warm day view. (This is an actual path one takes leading back to the cabin upon returning from the beach.)

Red Canopy - Springmaid Beach Resort, Myrtle Beach

Red Canopy (Springmaid Pier, Myrtle Beach), oil on canvas, 24" x 30"

A work in progress: A direct response of the light without the overt detail of the scene. I will be further punctuating the color passages throughout. (Maybe a little tribute to Potthast?)
