Badlands off Old Northeast Road

Development of a new painting in between commissions, oil on canvas, 36" x 36" (square format.)
This painting is a deconstruction of a landscape - rendering a reversal of the scene, to a point of "fusion of line and form" by the use of gestural linear marks in relationship to shapes and colors.
Based on a small 2" x 3" watercolor study I had done at the Badlands National Park, South Dakota, during my artist in residency (more info on the watercolor study can be seen in my coffee table book.) This scene is located just off Old Northeast Road looking West. I was intrigued by the window in the rock wall on a very clear day, with a warm breeze moving across the dry grass, creating a shimmering movement of color and line (I can still hear the prairie grass and crunch under foot of the gravel.) Love that place.

Recently my painting "Backwoods Delight" (36" x 36" oil on canvas) was awarded "Best of Show" at the LAA 9th Regional Juried Show, Indiana - will be on display until May 31st. Would look great in anyone's home, office or lobby.

This oil on canvas is a new painting I just finished. A slightly different approach from my other work (à la Malcolm Morley) the piece developed as I began to modify colors and lines using intuitive color and loose paint handling, suggesting a lyrical abstraction of my backwoods view.

A work in progress: Another piece I started, now going into the various areas to further layer color and value for an expressive solemn warm day view. (This is an actual path one takes leading back to the cabin upon returning from the beach.)

A work in progress: I have a number of paintings going on at the same time. This is an enlargement from the original piece, pulling the light in and around the suggested forms. Will continue to keep the general color and form scheme but further develop some hues for the expressive lighting.
