Tug Pulling Crane - Myrtle Beach

Watercolor Sketch Series – “Tug Pulling Crane” (off Myrtle Beach State Park)

While I’m still on the mend from Lyme Disease, I’ve found enjoyable revisiting one of my favorite TV shows from the 1970s — Barney Miller. (I received the complete DVD collection this past Christmas — it’s terrific.) I enjoy the opening credits of the show, so I never fast forward: a long shot of New York City across the water, with a tugboat pulling a large barge across the frame. There’s something captivating about that image — the quiet strength of a working tug, the sense of purpose as it moves its load toward some distant destination.

 

That same thought came to me a few years ago while sketching seascapes in watercolor off Myrtle Beach State Park. On the horizon, I spotted a tug pulling a large crane — the inspiration for my piece “Tug Pulling Crane” (watercolor, 4” x 5”). The sight reminded me of the old 20 Mule Team Borax image, or even a slow-moving camel caravan — steady, deliberate, and peaceful.
It remains one of my favorite works from that seascape watercolor sketch series.

On the Beach - Myrtle Beach State Park, SC

Haven’t posted in a while being busy with some curatorial work for a company. Finally snagged some vacation time down at Myrtle Beach State Park, SC, in a cabin - beach bummed and did some sketching.

Posted here, is a favorite painting I did, “On the Beach”, oil/canvas board, 12" x 16" (private collection.) It reminds me of all the aspects I love of the beach - the uninterrupted vista, wave and wind sounds, salt and sand smells, and relaxation.

Windjammer - Haiku Watercolor Painting

Conversing with a fellow artist recently caused me to revisit one of my favorite little watercolor paintings, “Windjammer" 4” x 5”, shown here from my Haiku/Haiga, mini, seascape painting series. (Inspired from my Myrtle Beach Watercolor sketches and haiku poetry reading.)

In short, a distillation/elimination of unnecessary detail. Less is more. Enabling the viewer to contemplate, and add accordingly - "and complete them in the mind's eye."

I’ll be heading back there later this summer to rest and sketch, once I finish two other commissions. (Check more out on my Instagram @timothywyoung)

I simply wanted to capture the fleeting tranquil early morning moment, with a sketchy soft brush approach. The scene was shot while in Myrtle Beach, SC, from a balcony, it had a Bellows-esque perspective and a Lorraine-esque colored horizon I couldn't resist. I also, was intrigued by the dark tones and values that morning, reminiscent of an early Monet moonlit piece, "The Beach at St. Adreese."

Art Exhibit - The Gallery at Rua

Wow, great evening! Thank you all who attended the artist reception Saturday night. Quite a turnout! Guests from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, and the surrounding Warsaw area, with a few surprise attendees. Can't thank enough the Rua staff and gallery director, superb hosts! My youngest daughter went on a trip with her friend’s family to Hawaii. One day she shot this pic with a cell phone. The minute I saw the image I thought painting. Color tones throughout subtly separate the sky, clouds, mountain, and Island, all creating a very picturesque setting. But what I saw were these little individual expressive moments that I would actually call movements.

I painted this small piece from a photo my daughter had shot from her cell phone while she was visiting Myrtle Beach, SC. I was attracted to the various abstracted color shapes throughout the composition.

A small tonal piece here. I composed the scene (Myrtle Beach State Park) to create a large expanse in a small picture plane. My two daughters are on the waters edge to give scale to the tonal banding created by the dry sand, wet sand, white waves, and ocean water, sky, and clouds. (Somewhat inspired by Edward Potthast.)

This is one from my "painting a day" Marine Nautical Flag series. While visiting Avon Lake (in-laws) I walk down to the Veteran's Memorial Park over looking Lake Erie. I enjoy hearing the flapping sounds of the nautical flags by the boat ramp. The sound reminds me of a number of films by Akira Kurosawa showing flags and banners waving with their snappy audible sound. (The banner scene in Seven Samurai is most memorable - credit to Ichiro Minawa, sound editor.) Am I painting the thought of sound?
