From the original 2005 painting (oil on canvas, 48” x 38”, private collection).
A little history behind the piece:
The
subject is Jean Turcan’s sculpture ‘The Student’, which sits on a small
island in a pond right here in the Village at Winona, Indiana. H. J.
Heinz actually bought the statue from Turcan in Paris and gifted it to
the Winona Assembly around 1894. Fun fact: Turcan was an assistant to
Auguste Rodin and carved many of Rodin’s famous clay models into stone!
